Revelation 19:1-10 utilizes the marriage metaphor to assure recipients of the message that although they are experiencing a crisis, they are in fact the Bride of Christ. Cognitive Metaphor Theory aids in the understanding of Revelation's metaphors and this dissertation employs Cognitive Metaphor Theory to establish the intrinsic relationship between the metaphors in Revelation and the genre of the text. Apocalyptic literature uses metaphor to reveal heavenly realities to a human audience. One purpose of the heavenly disclosure is to build a God-given identity in the believing community for catharsis in the midst of, or after a crisis. Through a study of Cognitive Metaphor Theory, the nature of first century marriages, and the use of the marriage metaphor in antiquity, an exegetical analysis of Revelation 19:1-10 will then demonstrate that the author of Revelation used metaphor for the purpose of building identity in the midst of, or after a crisis.
