This study examines three Latina Pentecostal ministers: Aimee Garcia Cortese, Julie Ramirez, and Camelia Mercado. The three Latinas believed God separated them to serve as senior pastors and ordained ministers within the mid-twentieth century Spanish Eastern District's (SEDAG) patriarchal milieu, one of fourteen Spanish-centric fellowships within the Assemblies of God. From its beginnings in 1927 as a single assembly to its status as a district with sixty-six assemblies in 1957, SEDAG presented significant challenges for women aspiring to become senior pastors. Moreover, there was no clear path toward ordination as a minister. In 1983, Garcia Cortese founded and led a church outside of the Spanish Eastern District, still within the Assemblies of God. Meanwhile, Ramirez and Mercado also established and pastored churches in 1962 and 1955, respectively, unlike Garcia Cortese. Despite being denied ordination in 1958, Garcia Cortese continued serving as a minister of the SEDAG, later pursuing ordination outside the district and achieving it in 1974. Similarly, Ramirez and Mercado applied for and received ordination within SEDAG in 1978. This study seeks to recognize Garcia Cortese, Ramirez, and Mercado as groundbreaking ministers for their achievements as senior pastors and ordained ministers and to determine whether their contributions are significant enough to canonize them as pioneers within the Spanish Eastern District of the Assemblies of God.
