Fishes swim in diverse and complicated ways, but too often, we tend to reduce their swimming to simplified models, which facilitates analysis, but limits complexity. Even when scientists study complex behaviors, they often ignore how context can influence their results. Here, we aimed to address this gap in the literature by first challenging the form equals function model, then by quantifying various features of maneuvering, with an emphasis on how speed impacts kinematics. First, we compared steady swimming bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) with steady swimming pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) to understand their forms and how their forms contribute to their kinematics. Based on prevailing thought, due to how morphologically similar the two species are, we should have found very few kinematic differences. However, we quantified signficantly different caudal fin kinematics that suggest these morphometrically similar species are functionally distinct. We also measured heart rate in bluegill to understand how it changes with swimming speed and maneuvering. By inserting electrodes into the fish's pericardial cavity and by filming and tracking their movements over time at a range of flow speeds, we concluded that heart rate changes on a very small scale as bluegill swim steadily at higher speeds, but that heart rate does not do a good job of capturing the costs of maneuvering. We also quantified fin and body kinematics during braking at various speeds. We observed distinct speed-related differences in how much force bluegill produce with their fins at increasing speeds, and also quantified how they handled stability during braking. Finally, we explored how bluegill solved the tradeoff between maximizing torque and minimizing moment of inertia during turning. Overall, we concluded that bluegill handle these tradeoffs differently at different turn speeds such that fast turns are not simply sped up slow turns, but are kinematically distinct.
