Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common complication reported among new mothers after childbirth. Over 50% of PPD cases are reported to remain undiagnosed. The implementation of standardized PPD screening practices has been demonstrated to increase early disease detection and diagnosis. Available evidence shows that most new mothers are not screened for PPD. Limited knowledge of providers about standardized screening protocols may contribute to poor screening practices. The project was aimed at providing evidence-based educational interventions to increase screening and early detection of postpartum depression among mothers who are within 12 months of childbirth by providers. The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model was employed to facilitate the implementation of effective PPD screening strategies at a primary care clinic. Providers and staff at the implementation site had a 1-hour educational sessions on evidence-based PPD screening practices and effective utilization of the EPDS tool. Pre-and post-intervention questionnaires were administered to clinic providers and staff before and eight weeks after the educational session. On the post-implementation evaluation, all participants reported to have increased knowledge and confidence in the implementation of evidence-based PPD screening protocols. The number of PPD screenings during project implementation was higher than the number of eligible patients reported to have been screened 8 weeks prior to the intervention. Overall project findings were consistent with prior study results that supported the implementation of evidence-based educational interventions for clinic providers to increase PPD screening and early disease detection rates.
