Background: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2022) names intimate partner violence (IPV) as a critical global health issue. IPV encompasses physical, sexual, or psychological damage inflicted by a current or former partner. Prevalent as it is, however, many nursing students report feeling ill-equipped to address IPV with trauma-informed care (TIC). This QI Project is intended to provide undergraduate nursing students at Shepherd University with basic TIC skills utilizing simulation-based training.Methodology: Using mixed methods, theater students role-played as IPV victims in standardized medical encounters. Nursing student TIC knowledge and confidence were assessed with pre- and post-simulation surveys. The simulation was performed utilizing Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring, centering on empathy, patient safety, and holistic care. Results: Students reported enhanced confidence in using TIC practices after the simulation experience. Post-intervention results revealed significant changes in the ability to recognize IPV signs, empathy with patients, and the design of security plans. These results justify the usefulness of simulation-based education training nursing students for caring for IPV survivors. Conclusion: It is important to include TIC training in nursing programs, as demonstrated in this project. Findings indicate that grounding theoretical content in experiential practice (as in IP experiences) augments student preparedness and increases patient care. Simulation-based education provides a valuable approach to developing context-specific, empathetic industry- and research-informed nursing care for vulnerable populations.
