This research was the first of its kind to examine the impact of spiritual transcendence on the professional quality of life among counselors as moderated by trauma. Despite efforts promoting counselor wellness, burnout remains a risk for many counselors as they engage in psychologically demanding work. Furthermore, counselors are known to have higher adverse childhood experiences than those in the general public, potentially contributing to burnout and secondary traumatic stress. This path analysis examined the relationships between spiritual transcendence, compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress among a sample of 222 mental health counselors to confirm theoretical assumptions about causality. Spiritual transcendence was positively correlated with compassion satisfaction and negatively correlated with both burnout and secondary traumatic stress. This suggests that individuals who experience higher levels of spiritual transcendence tend to derive more satisfaction from their compassion work and are less likely to experience burnout and secondary traumatic stress. The study also revealed that the interrelationships between spiritual transcendence and professional quality of life differ based on adverse childhood trauma. These findings have important theoretical implications that highlight spiritual transcendence as a multifaceted construct that buffers against burnout and secondary traumatic stress, especially for those with substantial trauma. Moreover, these insights convey crucial implications for counselor education programs and professional organizations that aim to enhance the professional quality of life of counselors.
