This dissertation investigates the directorial style of Steven Spielberg, one of the most commercially successful filmmakers in cinematic history, through a combined quantitative and qualitative analysis of his films. Focusing on three hallmark techniques-lighting effects ("The Haze"), expressive close-ups ("The Gaze"), and dynamic camera movements ("The Zoom")-this study explores how Spielberg's signature visual language manipulates audience emotions and constructs his distinctive narrative mythos. Drawing upon auteur theory and the theoretical frameworks of Jacques Lacan, Louis Althusser, and Emmanuel Levinas, the research examines the psychological and ideological dimensions of Spielberg's visual strategies. By applying the statistical methodology pioneered by Barry Salt and Warren Buckland, alongside detailed textual analysis, the dissertation quantitatively assesses the frequency and function of these stylistic elements across nine representative Spielberg films spanning various genres and decades. These include landmark works such as Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Schindler's List. The findings reveal a consistent application of "The Haze, The Gaze, and The Zoom" across Spielberg's career, demonstrating their role in eliciting emotional responses, guiding audience perspective, and reinforcing thematic content. Notably, the study shows how Spielberg's integration of these techniques has evolved, reflecting changes in technology, narrative priorities, and audience expectations. Through this lens, the dissertation addresses critiques of Spielberg's "manipulative" storytelling style, framing it as a deliberate and artful engagement with the viewer. This research not only contributes to the growing body of scholarship on Spielberg but also offers a replicable model for studying directorial style through statistical and textual methodologies. It underscores the enduring significance of cinematic authorship in a collaborative medium and provides new insights into the interplay between form, ideology, and audience psychology in contemporary film.
