Thus far, the 21st century in America has been defined by a series of large-scale traumatic events that have reshaped our cultural identity of what it means to be an American. While trauma can present itself in a multitude of forms, it always entails a break (physical, psychological, or both) from our normal reality. Such traumas individual bodies but can also be seen on a cultural level. We have just recently, as a society, moved past the period Marita Sturken has termed the Post 9/11 era, which has been characterized by unresolved trauma in realizing we are vulnerable to foreign terrorism and our government has failed to protect us from 9/11 and subsequent threats. In this dissertation, I begin with the events of September 11, 2001, then examine the role of the War on Terror and the process of memorialization ten years after the 9/11 attacks. The culture of fear that developed as a trauma response led to a surge in violence, and as I specifically consider in this paper, school shootings. The Post 9/11 era ends roughly in the summer of 2021 with the height of the COVID-19 pandemic; for each of these defining cultural events, I analyze the ritual and performative responses to collective trauma.I utilize Victor Turner's concept of the social drama as a framework for a moment of societal rupture, crisis, regressive actions, and either reintegration or permanent schism. With each new traumatic event, a cycle of social drama is created, and a new response is necessitated. I argue that the most effective forms of memorialization that help complete a social drama employ elements that are performative, participatory, and personalized. These sites of memory can take the form of spontaneous memorials, national memorials, museums, art, theatrical performances, rituals, community building, and activism. Confronting trauma is a communal process. Only together can we reshape our cultural memory and move toward healing.
