For decades, literary critics who have grappled with the Gothic novel have inevitably been confronted with the puzzling literary relationship of Ann Radcliffe and Matthew G. Lewis. This study constructs an intertextual discourse, a symbolic conversation, between Radcliffe and Lewis as it manifests itself through three of their novels, The Mysteries of Udolpho, The Monk, and The Italian. At times a conversation, at times a debate, the authors' ideological contestation emerges in the trilogy of novels. The study brings to light their textual interplay subverting or sanctioning tradition gender roles for women through an analysis of their own and each other's heroines; it uncovers textual dialogue which points to both writers' differing views of monstrousness and motherhood via their treatment of mother figures; it demonstrates how Lewis set up against Radcliffe's Burkean view of natural landscapes his own version of sublimity, genteel pornography; and finally, it examines how cycles of repetition influence narrative order and disorder. The focus, therefore, is on reflexive and reactive moments in the novels, coded clues which point to the novels' and the authors' preoccupation with their own intertextuality, moments where these novels are read as re-visions that are in fact critical re-readings of the other. The compilation of these intertextual moments ultimately results in the formation of a companion text to the novels themselves that reads as a theoretical discourse on the nature of Gothic fiction.
