This qualitative phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of military veterans who served in leadership roles, exploring the challenges of transitioning into a non-military leadership style in the civilian workforce. This purpose addressed the problem of military veterans who serve in leadership roles are challenged to transition to a non-military leadership style in the civilian workforce. Taijfel and Turner's conceptual framework model expressed the social identity of transitioning veterans. This research guided the understanding of how veterans successfully transition from their identity as military members to adaptation to leadership roles. Data was collected from 24 military veterans through open-ended, semi-structured interviews, from participants in two focus group discussions, and from all participant's responses to an online questionnaire. Seven themes were extracted using thematic analysis, including identity, resilience, challenges, and adaptation; leadership and influence; resources and support; communication, interpersonal skills, and alignment; social connections and rapport building; well-being, support, and transition positivity; transition and integration. However, participants also recognized the challenges but overcame them by using their military experience to assist as a civilian leader in a civilian organization. The themes emphasized the need for continuous community support as they found helpful resources within veteran service organizations for successful endeavors in these new leadership positions. These findings shared from the sample explained that such methods to overcome challenges with these transitions encompass recognizing how leadership models are influential and can be influenced by the new workforce while still promoting military structures accepted by workers. The findings further include resources and support from social connections and rapport building that were vital to transitioning. Recommendations for future research include implanting a quantitative methodological approach that requires no human contact, and a larger sample size allows for more extensive data collection.
