The prevalence and incidence of diabetes varies among races and ethnicities in the US, with the Hispanic/Latino community being one of the hardest hit groups. This occurrence has been partly ascribed to the acculturation that occurs when Hispanic individuals migrate to the US, and as a result begin to forgo their traditional foods and diets. The purpose of this project is to reduce the hemoglobin A1c among adult Hispanic 20-65 with T2D using cultural-specific diet education intervention. This intervention uses a daily text-messaging reminder over the 3-monthintervention. The health belief model was used as the conceptual framework for this project. Fifty Hispanic participants were recruited for this project with an average age of 49.7 (SD = 9.2).Most of the participants are female (80%), and more than two-third of the participants are married or have domestic partners (68%). Almost three-quarter of the participants are employed and a vast majority make below $50,000 annually. A paired sample t-test was conducted. The average HbA1c scores of the participants before the SMS-based cultural-specific diet education intervention was 7.9 (SD = 1.43), and the score after the intervention was 6.9 (SD = 0.92). The difference was statistically significant with a with the degree of freedom of 49, p-value p = .001and t-value t = 8.34. These results shows that the daily text-messaging intervention was effective in improving the HbA1c, weight, and blood pressure of participants on this project.
