Postpartum anxiety (PPA) is a common yet often misunderstood condition affecting mothers during postpartum. Many providers often overlook PPA and attribute common symptoms such as irritability, excessive worry, and irrational fears to postpartum depression (PPD) or "new mom jitters." There is a lack of screening tools and awareness among providers to diagnose PPA. In fact, there is not a standardized screening tool for PPA. Currently, providers are using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to assess PPA. Only 30% of the questions on this screening relate to PPA, thus many women are undiagnosed. The Postpartum Specific Anxiety Scale-Research Short Form (PSAS-RSF) is a tool created to accurately assess for PPA and has been found to have a high reliability and validity in detecting PPA. The purpose of this practice improvement project was to identify if using the PSAS-RSF can assist to recognize PPA and identify those who should seek follow-up care with their providers to prevent adverse effects. This study was completed by distributing the PSAS-RSF to individuals that attended a free well-baby clinic. Once the PSAS-RSF was completed, participants received an email regarding a positive or negative result and follow-up recommendations that included a list of local providers and evidenced-based interventions to treat PPA. Two months after completion of the pre-survey, a post-survey was emailed to all participants regarding whether they sought out follow-up care, what treatment was offered, and their thoughts regarding the PSAS-RSF.The project's results illustrated six (37.5%) participants screened positive for PPA. Out of the six eligible participants that screened positive, only two (33.3%) completed the post-survey. Both participants indicated followed-up with their provider, and both were offered pharmacologic treatment for PPA. The participants were also asked if they felt PSAS-RSF was an effective tool in assessing mood and diagnosing PPA. Five (71%) of the participants felt that the PSAS-RSF was "very accurate" in assessing mood and a reliable tool to diagnose PPA, and two (29%) felt that it was "extremely accurate." By implementing screening for PPA, nurse practitioners can increase awareness and treatment for women with PPA, which can ultimately enhance quality of life.
