Early modern Japan was home to a panoply of regional traditions of learning and literature. Among these, the group of scholars and literati from Mito Domain achieved particular renown, giving rise to the appellation "Mitogaku," or "the Mito school," still widely used within Japanese and Anglophone academia. However, on closer inspection, the Mito literatus group appears to defy such terminology. Unlike some other schools of thought and traditions of learning, it cannot boast a singular philosophical persuasion, a coherent doctrine, or an intellectual "founding father." This dissertation develops a new conceptual framework that eschews the concept of school, rethinking the early Mito literatus group (ca. 1650-1750) as a community of textual practice. Gleaning insights from Etienne Wenger's social theory of learning, it hones in on textual production by Mito scholar-retainers as a form of practice and produces an account of the community's early history. The dissertation is anchored in a collection of primary texts authored by Asaka Tanpaku (1656-1738), a Mito scholar-retainer who played a major role in the community's formation, maturation, and day-to-day functioning. The dissertation demonstrates that the concept of school is of little use when studying the Mito literatus group and investigates its origins and institutional underpinnings as a community of textual practice. It proceeds to discuss the emergence of such practice in Mito and its connection to the multifaceted Sinitic notion of wen. After adumbrating the economy of textual practice in the domain, the dissertation concludes with an exploration of the dynamics of communal engagement and trajectories of participation in the Mito literatus group. To the field of Japanese studies, this dissertation contributes a new conceptual framework that transcends the disciplinary boundaries of literary studies, philology, and intellectual history. It is also a biography of Asaka Tanpaku, a major figure in early modern Japanese history whose life and works have not received sustained scholarly attention in any language to date.
