Geographically Isolated Wetlands provide essential ecosystem services and support biodiversity, yet these wetlands often lack representation in conservation policies. In the southeastern United States, small wetlands are critical habitats for many species. Restoration efforts in these systems are focusing on removing canopy cover for specialist plants and herpetofauna; however, it is unclear if canopy removal will negatively impact songbird communities that use these habitats. The purpose of my study is to evaluate the response of songbird communities to woody plant thinning treatments: cut-and-leave and cut-and-remove. Twelve wetlands at a private mixed-use preserve in Berkeley County South Carolina, Halidon Hill Preserve, were selected, with treatments replicated three times, stratified geographically. Four years of data, including three years of pre-treatment data were used to conduct this test. I found that canopy removal in small, isolated wetlands did not influence songbird biodiversity, but it did influence specific species. Some species like Eastern Bluebird and Eastern Wood-Pewee increased in the cut treatments while other species like Common Yellowthroat decreased in those treatments. My study suggests that restoration efforts to create high-light isolated small wetlands will not negatively impact songbird biodiversity and it may enhance the habitat of certain birds.
