Emily Dickinson has long been regarded as one of America's great poets. Critical theories like psychoanalysis, feminism, and stylistics have been applied to her poems, but one of the latest topics of discourse is centered around a new historicism approach to her work, specifically regarding the American Civil War. Every critic in this study uses a historical lens to assert that Dickinson is a war poet, and all of them give sufficient evidence to support this claim. Her most prolific time of writing was during the American Civil War when almost half of her 1,887 poems were written. Critics often study Dickinson's war poetry in the context of three themes: war and peace, victory and sacrifice, and God and nature. These themes certainly encompass the trauma she must have endured as a member of a prominent pro-Union family, but also reveal her capacity to explore the world within her own private sphere as well as within the global public sphere. Dickinson's war poetry offers commentary on the female role in the war, reflects the American national identity, and contributes to the American war poetry canon. Her subjectivity as an individual and part of the collectively traumatized is integral to her effect on literary studies and the American identity. Dickinson defines American ideals and sculpts the identity of a Victorian American woman through public and private gender roles, vivid imagery of indigenous landscapes, and the point of view of an expatriate.
