Liquid-sprayable cellulose hydromulches (HM) are in development as polyethylene (PE) mulch replacements in organic agriculture. This study compared two HMs rates in dark and light colors against PE films and paper sheet mulch in organic strawberry and cabbage crops. Measuring weed suppression, crop yield and quality, soil nutrients, edaphoclimatic responses, and arthropod densities (pests and natural enemies). In strawberry, HMs provided a combined effect of physical weed control and modification of edaphoclimatic variables, likely offering suitable conditions for crop establishment and production, yielding equal to or higher than PE at higher HMs rates, with no impact on fruit quality and a low impact on soil properties. Mulching had variable effects on arthropods. Indirect effects on weed suppression affected Lygus fruit damage and densities of some canopy and soil-dwelling arthropods. Density-activity of small-sized carabids was reduced using HMs, likely as a physical barrier effect. HMs did not affect parasitoids and pollinators.
