Engagement for early childhood educators is a critical element when assessing the quality of professional development programs. This study investigated how relational mentorship influences rural early childhood educators who engaged in professional development. This 14-week qualitative case study analyzed seven rural students? professional development experiences in the early childhood educator track at a career technology center. The study's findings centered around participant motivation, barriers that impacted professional development engagement, and relational pedagogy ideologies that supported participant engagement. Several vital discussion points emerged from the findings. These key points include autonomy and self-efficacy, which support the role of intrinsic motivation when participants are in a holistic and trusted environment. Characteristics and connections with the relational mentors impacted the outcomes of the study. The study's theoretical perspectives included a socio-cognitive and socio-cultural stance on professional development and two tripartite models of encouragement and self-determination. The study also identified key elements of education and health inequities that rural early childhood educators often experience. The findings are relevant for teacher educators, policymakers, researchers, and early childhood educators.
