This dissertation consists of three chapters studying the intersection of operations, decision making, and public policy. The first chapter considers the societal decision of how to invest in asteroid detection technologies that can potentially prevent the impact of near-Earth objects and the tradeoffs inherent to the decision. The second chapter examines the role of battery storage alongside renewable energy for electricity grids with high renewable mandates and how a policymaker may choose a renewable target. The third chapter studies the effect of uncertainty about the social cost of carbon on renewable energy investments by individual utilities and the implications for learning over time about the societal impacts of carbon emissions.
