Over the course of an eight-month ethnography, this dissertation delves into the empowering journey of Indonesian grassroots mothers who, as transnational domestic workers, actively shape and embody feminist consciousness. It shines a spotlight on rural women who, through their participation in transnational migration, redefine traditional notions of motherhood, gender roles, and family practices. Their acts of sending money and gifts challenge established gender and family norms, allowing them to reclaim autonomy as household leaders. This study uncovers the active role of transnational mothers in shaping alternative interpretations of money, moving beyond its economic value to its political implications. It also redefines family and motherhood dynamics in Indonesia. While transnational migration is often viewed through the lens of global structures and the political and economic systems of globalization and neoliberalism, which often marginalize women from lower social and economic backgrounds, this research presents a different narrative. It places female transnational domestic workers at the forefront of global migration, disputing the prevailing focus on overarching political structures when examining their experiences. This study underscores the transformative role of Indonesian female transnational domestic workers in shaping the understandings and practices of motherhood and family. It posits that motherhood and family are critical sites for personal and structural transformation rather than merely arenas of oppression and marginalization. The study also examines the redefined significance of money and gifts in a transnational context, moving beyond the traditional economic lens of remittances to encompass personal and political dimensions. This transformation, driven by female transnational domestic workers, is termed a transformation from below.
