Species declines and extinctions characterize the Anthropocene. (1) In Chapter 1, we tested whether phylogeny, geography, and 22 ecological traits predict regional population trends for 380 North American bird species. Groups of long-distance migrants including warblers exhibited negative population trends. Our results reinforce the notion that variation in avian population trends is controlled by ecological traits, phylogeny, and geography. (2) To understand how the factors of global change impact populations, we must first understand their migratory connectivity. In Chapter 2, we integrated extrinsic tracking data with intrinsic stable isotope and genetic markers to estimate range-wide migratory connectivity for American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla). Our integrated, range-wide migratory connectivity results showed that over half of all breeding redstarts spend the nonbreeding season in Caribbean & Greater Antilles region. (3) Predicting distributional shifts for migratory birds is inherently complex given the diversity of ways climate change can impact species throughout their annual cycles. In Chapter 3, we examine the relationship between nonbreeding seasonal rainfall and range-wide breeding origins for redstarts over the past century using stable hydrogen isotopes. Nonbreeding populations of redstarts experiencing a drying trend in rainfall showed a corresponding southward shift in their mean breeding origin (and vice versa). (4) To date, species distribution models for migratory birds have not included climate information from throughout their annual cycles. In Chapter 4, we used generalized joint attribute modeling to test the accuracy of three model iterations in predicting breeding bird abundance. The full annual cycle model that incorporated interactions between nonbreeding rainfall and migration distance best predicted contemporary breeding redstart abundance. The interaction term between nonbreeding rainfall and migration distance highlighted that low nonbreeding rainfall has a negative impact on breeding redstart abundance for populations with longer migration distances. Forecasting breeding redstart abundance, using the full annual cycle model with interactions, revealed range-wide population declines, with local extirpation in Midwestern North America. (5) My dissertation illustrates how migratory connectivity can elucidate the complex mechanistic drivers operating over space and time to shape breeding range dynamics for a migratory bird, and emphasizes how climate change impacts species distributions throughout the annual cycle.
