This study will evaluate the effectiveness of peer-based resilience education programs on self-reported measures of resilience and self-reported stigma towards mental health for first responders, law enforcement and healthcare workers in rural communities. As there is significant research into the effects of traumatic events in the field on workers in these occupations, suitable treatment interventions are necessary to reduce rates of suicide, substance use, and other maladaptive trauma-related outcomes. The research question evaluated in this study is: "How does a peer-based resilience psychoeducation group impact self-reported measures of resilience and self-reported stigma towards mental health?" Participants will include first responder, law enforcement and healthcare workers from Chautauqua County, New York and Cattaraugus County, New York. This study will utilize a quantitative approach through data collection by questionnaires completed at the start and end of peer-support groups to determine if self-reported measures of resilience and stigma towards mental health change with the implementation of peer-based education groups. The results of this study will help determine if rural area health, emergency response and law enforcement agencies might benefit from using peer-based programming to create low-cost opportunities for first responders to discuss mental health and resilience.
