The adoption of AI-driven technologies across various sectors, including digital marketing, has transformed how brands and organizations engage with consumers. Deepfake advertising presents new possibilities in reaching audiences and enables greater levels of personalization and consumer engagement. However, deepfake technology in advertising also presents fundamental questions about authenticity, transparency, and consumer trust. The quantitative research investigates deepfake advertisements' impact on consumer online purchase. This quantitative research collected data through a survey and had 153 respondents. The sample respondents were located in the United States of America and were qualified by age (18+), social media usage, knowledge of deepfake technology, and online purchasing frequency. The data analysis indicates that there is a significant relationship between consumers' perceptions of deepfake advertisements and their perceptions of manipulation risk. Perceived manipulation risk was found to mediate consumers' online purchase intentions when analyzed through the theoretical framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Moreover, the research contributes to the current academic literature on AI, deepfakes, and advertising, suggesting practical insights for stakeholders like advertising professionals, marketers, and policymakers. Additionally, the study provides consumers with knowledge to critically assess advertising content contributing to the academic and regulatory discussions about the ethical and psychological implications of using deepfakes in advertising and marketing.
