This thesis studies the economics of class in rural China in the early 1950s. It explores the concepts of class and Marxian class analysis in China under the rule of the Communist Party. It provides a relatively detailed account of the early 1950s' nation-wide Land Reform that was based on the Marxian classification of peasant households. Since the Marxian classification was based on peasant household's resource using behaviors in land and labor and the resulting income composition, the thesis formulates an income maximizing model to define Marxian exploiting income, and its proportion in total net income--higher proportion meant higher class status. Using survey data in the early 1950s' rural China identified by class status, and guided by the implications of the maximizing model of farming household, the thesis further investigates the productivity differences across classes of households. The empirical production function methods, and factor demands methods and the average yields methods have all demonstrated that the higher classes of households had higher total productivity, even after the Land Reform when they were no longer allowed to hire in labor or rent out land freely.
