This thesis explains the formation of two gendered regimes of production in the South China manufacturing region. It addresses the fundamental question of how control over women workers is accomplished in an economic miracle founded on labor intensive industrial production. The empirical puzzle for this study is: why do two patterns of production politics, "localistic despotism" and "familial hegemony", emerge in the two factories owned by the same enterprise, managed by the same team of managers, producing the same range of electronics products for export to the same overseas markets and using the same technology and labor processes? Comparative ethnographic data depict the dynamics of these two regimes within the same regional economy. "Localistic despotism" in the Shenzhen factory describes how management controls a migrant workforce by institutionalizing a coercive disciplinary regime, exploitating workers' localistic networks and constructing women as "maiden workers". In the Hong Kong plant, on the other hand, the regime of "familial hegemony" is characterized by hegemonic rather than despotic control. Management uses shopfloor discourses of familialism, factory policies facilitating women's fulfillment of familial responsibilities, and the construction of women as "matron workers" to establish control. Systematic comparison across the two cases suggests that the distinctive social organization of the labor markets is the key variable in determining management's choice of control strategies and workers' modes of resistance. Through resolving this empirical puzzle, this study makes two major theoretical claims. Firstly, I argue that feminist analyses of gender and work need to develop theories that explain how and why different social constructions of gender arise under different institutional and power configurations. In this regard, a reconstructed theory of production regime is a useful theoretical vehicle for analysing the diverse ways of constructing gender in the industrial workplace. Secondly, this study suggests reconstructing the theory of production politics by highlighting the social organization of labor markets as a critical variable mediating between politics of the state and politics on the shopfloor. This variable accounts for women workers' varying conditions of dependence, management's choice of diverse control strategies, and different social constructions of gender on the shopfloors.
