The White-throated Magpie-jay (Calocitta formosa) of Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica was studied for 3 consecutive breeding seasons from 1980-1982. 103 birds were marked with colored leg bands, and unmarked adults were distinguished via plumage characteristics. Data were collected on 12 breeding flocks and 56 active nests. Group size was 2-14 (x = 6.7); group members foraged and roosted together, and cooperated in defense against predators and encroachment by alien jays. The breeding system included singular breeding, plural breeding, and partial range-sharing among related females. Auxiliaries assisted full-time, part-time, marginally, or not at all. Many non-breeding birds did not "belong" exclusively to one group, but instead traveled as helpers and/or floaters among 2 or more flocks. Full-time helper ratio was skewed towards females, primarily due to differential dispersal of the sexes after their first year. Helpers were chiefly offspring of the breeding pair. Delayed recriprocity by non-breeding, non-filial relatives was noted. Behavioral and biological features characterizing the nesting cycle and nesting patterns, and patterns and sources of nest loss in Calocitta formosa are described. Predation constituted the most important source of nest loss. Hatching failure and desertion were principal causes of egg loss and early nest failure, respectively. Helpers affected onset of first laying, egg hatchability, and nest predation, and thereby increased nesting success through specific behavioral contributions, especially contributions to defense. More than 5 helpers was associated with reduced reproductive performance. Intraspecific disturbance had a negative impact on nesting success. Disturbance was due largely to alien jays, although resident jays also contributed. Helper contributions were influenced by gender, breeding status, age, and relatedness of the helper to the breeding pair. Defensive error rate declined with age. Helper contributions peaked at 2 years of age and declined thereafter. Helpers over 3 years of age were significantly more likely to engage in disruptive behavior. These age-specific differences were reflected in breeder nesting success. Nesting success of novices was markedly lower than that of older, more experienced breeders. Poor novice performance was due to 2 independent factors: (1) reduced auxiliary support; and (2) youth and inexperience. Novices nesting on natal territory enjoyed certain advantages over emigrees.
