Throughout the previous century, numerous methods for the synthesis of phased array apertures have been developed. Nevertheless, these fall short when faced with the challenging demands of modern wireless communications systems. Present-day applications like GPS and 5G/6G require such characteristics as ultra-wide bandwidths, ultra-wide fields-of-view, scalability, and low cost and weight which are difficult to simultaneously achieve through traditional methods. Here, 3 research efforts are outlined with unique contributions to the field of phased array synthesis and design. Together, they represent important steps toward the holistic, or all-encompassing, synthesis of phased arrays.
