As the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust, silicon is ubiquitously present in natural water as dissolved silica. High concentrations of dissolved silica in saline industrial wastewaters and brines cause silica scale formation, significantly hampering the efficacy of diverse engineered systems. Despite the common strategy of applying functional polymers as antiscalants in process feedwater to mitigate inorganic scaling, current antiscalants, including leading commercial products, are often ineffective for silica-based scaling due to its amorphous structure and the scale formation mechanisms that differ from those of crystalline scales. The mechanisms of silica scaling and its inhibition are complex and poorly understood. In this dissertation, we address the knowledge gaps in the underlying mechanisms of silica scaling inhibition with functional polymers in solutions, as well as the formation of silica scale on engineered surfaces. We first systematically investigated the role of molecular structures and functional groups of polymeric antiscalants in stabilizing oversaturated silicic acid solutions. We synthesized a series of functional polymers and assessed their efficiency in inhibiting silica polymerization. Combining the experimental findings with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we identified key factors of the tested polymers that effectively impede the initial steps of silica polymerization, highlighting the molecular design principles of effective antiscalants for silica scaling mitigation.Using the synthesized polymer as a viable silica antiscalant, we proceeded to assess its inhibition efficiency across diverse ionic compositions and temperatures commonly encountered in various engineered processes, including desalination, brine concentrators, and cooling towers. The systematic assessment of inhibition efficiency relative to solution chemistry was supplemented with MD simulations, elucidating how elevated concentrations of specific ions influence the binding interactions between polymer functional groups and reactive silicic acid molecules. While the above analyses provided mechanistic insights into silica scaling inhibition in solutions, the mechanisms of silica polymerization on surfaces remain largely unexplored, primarily due to the lack of effective characterization techniques. We optimized a measurement device that allows for the real-time in-situ monitoring of silica scale formation on the surface at the scale of ng/cm2. Our investigations with this device demonstrated molecular interactions between oversaturated silicic acid and functionalized surfaces, underscoring the critical role of surface functionalities in the formation of scaling by silica polymerization.Overall, this dissertation discusses the underlying mechanisms of silica polymerization and its inhibition with antiscalants in solutions and on surfaces. Through a synergistic experimental-computational approach, we provided molecular design principles for effective antiscalants and demonstrated their efficacy in realistic water compositions. This research also addressed the challenges of silica polymerization on surfaces, enabling precise monitoring. These findings improve our fundamental understanding of silica polymerization inhibition, paving the way for developing effective strategies for silica scaling mitigation in various engineered processes.
