Music therapy research (93%) has indicated the impact of music therapy on older adults with dementia, which is enhancing the quality of life, decreasing stress and agitation, improving mood, increasing cognitive and language skills, and improving physical movement. The purpose of this study was to review and analyze publications in the Journal of Music Therapy (JMT) and Music Therapy Perspectives (MTP) on older adults with dementia from the years 1980-1999 and 2000-2024. The researcher sought to find the most effective interventions and mostly used assessments for older adults with dementia. The results of this content analysis suggest that singing activities are the mostly used intervention, observation is the most common assessment used followed by using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) as a reference for creating music therapy assessments, and that more research is needed due to the small number of articles published. Recommendations were also given to expand research in the field of older adults with dementia.
