Solar energy has garnered tremendous interest due to its clean and abundant nature but is limited by its intermittency. Two-step thermochemical cycles provide a promising method of utilizing solar thermal energy, while mitigating intermittency problems. In these processes, thermal energy first drives the endothermic reduction of a metal oxide producing an oxygen-deficient intermediate, then the material is oxidized using O2, CO2, or H2O, regenerating its starting state and producing heat, CO, or H2, the latter two being precursors for solar fuels. This dissertation explores two routes towards optimizing these thermochemical cycles, composition (internal) modifications and external modifications. Compositional modifications utilize substitution to tune a material's physical and chemical behavior, such as thermodynamic properties and thermal and structural stability. Investigating the effects of Fe-doping on MgMnO4 materials for use in thermochemical energy storage systems elucidates the enthalpy- entropy trade-off of improving reduction extent and storage capabilities. To support broader material screening for optimal metal oxide compositions, a new reactor has been designed and commissioned, capable of simultaneously testing seven metal oxide compositions, enabling a high throughput approach to experimental materials testing. While compositional modifications can successfully lower reduction temperatures, it can have an adverse effect on the oxidation reaction, lowering overall fuel production. To address this limitation, this work also investigates external modifications that tune the material characteristics without permanently altering the material. The application of an electric field through a molten salt generated electronic double layer is demonstrated as a means to lower the reduction temperature of ceria, a well-studied benchmark material, compared to a thermal only approach. Because the applied potential can be removed, the favorable oxidation thermodynamics of the material are preserved. The concept is validated experimentally and its practical viability investigated through a thermodynamic system level model and technoeconomic analysis. This dissertation contributes to the development of improved thermochemical materials by investigating crucial thermodynamic trade-offs, demonstrating a high-throughput testing platform, and a novel technique for optimizing material performance. These advances aim to improve efficiency and lower the cost of thermochemical fuel production, bringing solar fuel technology closer to commercialization.
