Although the various articulations of imitatio revolve at the center of sixteenth-century Iberian poetic practice in both the Old World and the New, they have only begun to be studied with the aid of a coherent theoretical framework. Moreover, while some work has proven to be extremely valuable, up until now it has all focused on lyric poetry, especially the phenomenon of Petrarchism. In my dissertation, I accept the challenge posed by the complexity of imitation in the "long narrative poem," and in the process I unravel some of the enigmas of the Araucana. The Araucana and Os Lusiadas stand themselves as models of a newfound, exotic flowering of poetry: the sixteenth-century "epic of the Indies." In both poems the traditional Occidental practice of imitatio is confronted with the difficult task of "making sense" of the encounter of Europeans with new, non-Western physical and cultural realities. Poetic imitation, far from serving as mere digressive "ornament" in otherwise "historical" poems, becomes a key element in the construction of a new cultural identity that has global repercussions: the Colonial. I delineate the questions raised by imitation in the Araucana and map out the theoretical grid to be used in charting these as yet unexplored regions of Ercilla's poem, addressing the closely related problems of eclectic imitation in the "long poem" and the spinning of the web of prophecy in the Araucana. My analysis of Ercilla's most ambitious essays at imitation in the Araucana reveal the intensity of the poet's competitive spirit. I illuminate the confluence of the formal practice of imitation with the theme of prophecy that links the mantic orb of Fiton's grotto to the prophetic globes of the final canto of the Lusiadas. The underlying common identity of these prophetic spheres as representations of the Neoplatonic Intelligible All, in turn establishes the parameters of Ercilla's intensely competitive poetic and imperialist rivalry, with his Iberian contemporary Camoens. Understanding the practice of imitatio/aemulatio proves essential for revealing previously unremarked dimensions of the construction of the new Iberian identity of worldwide imperialist and colonizer.
