Pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL) is a quasi-bottom-up nanoparticle (NP) synthesis technique where nanoparticles are produced by focusing a pulsed laser onto a solid target submerged in a liquid. This study explores PLAL in two target-liquid systems: (1) gold in alkanethiol (AT) decane solutions and (2) bismuth in water with varying concentrations of dissolved gases. In the first system, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are rendered hydrophobic through functionalization with alkanethiols. The effects of alkane chain length (octane-, dodecane-, hexadecane-, and octadecanethiol) and ligand concentration on the nanoparticles' optical properties, stability, and surface chemistry were investigated. Interestingly, the rate of sedimentation increased with increasing concentration indicative of NP-NP attraction mediated by the ligand shell. A key finding was the successful incorporation of AT-AuNPs into the hydrophobic bilayer membrane of polymeric vesicles, as demonstrated by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) images, underscoring the hydrophobic nature of these nanoparticles. For the second system, laser fluence, environmental conditions (degassed, ambient, and CO2-pressurized), and aging significantly impacted the composition and morphology of bismuth oxide-based nanoparticles. At low fluences and reduced dissolved gas concentrations, minimally oxidized spherical BiNPs were formed. In contrast, higher fluences under ambient conditions produced Bi-Bi2O3 nanoparticles that evolved into bundled nanowire heterostructures after 24 hours of aging. These nanowires exhibited resistive switching properties when analyzed using conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM). Regardless of fluence, bismuth subcarbonate nanosheets formed three hours after ablation in a CO2-saturated environment. The formation of these 1D and 2D nanostructures prompted an investigation into the dynamics of the laser-induced plasma and cavitation bubble under various PLAL conditions. A fluence threshold for the onset of oxidation (~15 J/cm²), which under specific environmental conditions promotes nanostructure growth, was linked to anomalies in plasma temperature and bubble growth, driven by the thermodynamic state of water at the leading edge of the expanding plasma.
