Two-dimensional materials have been the subject of a wide body of research over the past twenty years. As the family of experimentally observed 2D materials has expanded, so have methods for the chemical modification of these materials. Through strategies such as surface functionalization, substitutional doping, and morphotaxial conversion, researchers have achieved a wide variety of novel 2D structures with promising optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. Despite these advances, there are key challenges associated with characterizing chemical reactions involving 2D materials at an atomic level. As a result, there are still limitations on our fundamental understanding of how to deterministically modify 2D materials to access desirable structures and properties. This thesis presents two novel methods for chemically modifying 2D materials, in particular 2D metal chalcogenides. The first project describes the surface functionalization of 2D WSe2 and MoS2 with trifluoromethyl groups. Extensive characterization shows that the trifluoromethyl groups covalently bond to the surface of these materials, with substitutional oxygen defects acting as sites of high chemical reactivity. This electrophilic reaction results in p type doping, which can be used to tune the optical and electronic properties of WSe2 and MoS2. The second project describes the morphotaxial halogenation of 2D InSe and In2Se3. Through a solution-phase reaction with I2 or Br2, electrochemically exfoliated InSe and In2Se3 nanosheets template the synthesis of ultrathin InI2 and InBr2. This project marks a departure from previous morphotaxy studies by using solution-phase reactants and solution-processed 2D materials. The results highlight key considerations for the application of morphotaxy to solution-processed materials, including the role of residual polymer in mediating the reaction and stabilizing the flake morphology. Furthermore, the reaction demonstrates a novel synthetic strategy for accessing 2D metal halides. The work presented in this thesis expands the toolbox of chemical modification techniques available to researchers in the field of 2D materials. More importantly, the extensive chemical characterization undertaken with both systems provides fundamental insight into the reactivity of 2D materials by identifying structural features involved in surface functionalization and morphotaxy reactions. This understanding will inform future efforts to chemically tailor the properties of existing 2D materials and synthesize new materials with unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties.
