This thesis explores the phenomenon known as the "fatherhood premium" in the U.S. labor market, analyzing how fatherhood influences men's work hours, wages, and sectoral employment, juxtaposed against the well-documented "motherhood penalty" affecting women. Utilizing data from the American Community Survey (ACS), this study employs multiple regression models to dissect the impact of fatherhood on labor market outcomes across various demographics and socioeconomic statuses. Findings indicate that fatherhood is associated with increased work hours and a potential wage premium for men, suggesting a societal valuation of men's breadwinning role post-parenthood. Conversely, the analysis reveals that parenthood reinforces traditional gender roles, with women facing a decrease in work hours and persistent wage gaps. The study delves into the public versus private sector employment shifts among parents, noting that fathers in public sectors tend to work fewer hours, possibly due to better work-life balance policies, whereas mothers may extend work hours for financial stability. The research underscores the need for policies promoting equitable work arrangements and supporting both fathers and mothers in balancing work and family responsibilities. This thesis contributes to the discourse on gender equality and labor economics by highlighting the nuanced impacts of fatherhood on men's professional lives, advocating for a reevaluation of workplace norms and policies to foster a more inclusive and equitable labor market.
