Blockchain networks promise to create a "computer-in-the-sky" controlled not by a single company but by an entire community, thus enhancing reliability, transparency, and fairness. A crucial component of any blockchain network is a consensus protocol. Run by a network of nodes, this protocol enables clients to execute commands on the computer-in-the-sky and obtain correct, consistent results. Although consensus protocols have been studied for decades, blockchains run consensus protocols in novel settings, requiring new models to study them. I present my work modeling three such aspects of consensus in blockchains. First, I model the limited communication and computation capacities of blockchain nodes and prove the security of protocols in such environments. Second, I model the heterogeneous security trade-offs desired for different applications and show protocols in which different users can simultaneously achieve optimal security trade-offs. Third, I model different types of blockchain clients---communicating versus silent, and always-on versus intermittently on---and show optimal protocols for each type. Fourth, I demonstrate and mitigate attacks arising from the open-participation ("permissionless") model.
