When the unified German government passed the Stasi Files Act in 1991, individuals were able to view their Stasi files. These files presented a version of personal life events as recorded by a stranger with specific ideological and bureaucratic motives. Since 1991, scholarship on the Stasi files has focused on the language of the Stasi and its institutional structure, the experience of victims reading their files, and a selection of high-profile cases. In this dissertation, I approach questions of power, language, and identity through the lens of both Media Studies and Orality and Literacy scholarship. These two fields have not yet been placed in conversation with one another, nor have they meaningfully informed the study of Stasi files. Drawing on the insights of both of these fields, I show how the medium of the file uniquely (de)contextualizes the Stasi language it contains, creating a space to build and shape Stasi authority over the target, and to alter and shape the identity of the target. I refer to this theoretical framework of analysis as my Language and Media framework, which I use in the final section of my dissertation to read and analyze a selection of the Wolf Biermann file materials. I rely on a set of file materials made public by the Stasi-Unterlagen-Archiv, in order to explore both the Stasi correspondence leading up to Biermann's expatriation, as well as the aftermath in the GDR. My dissertation offers a new way of viewing language, authority and identity in the case of the Stasi, placing the medium of the file itself at the forefront of the investigation.
