Study abroad (SA) is widely regarded as a valuable immersive context for language and intercultural learning (Sanz & Morales-Front, 2018). The extant research has focused on non-Anglophone learners learning English as a foreign language (EFL) and Anglophone learners learning languages other than English (LOTEs). In South Korea, too, SA has become increasingly popular, particularly among middle-class families, while working holiday (WH) programs also attract young adults seeking to work and travel abroad while learning a target language. Each year, thousands of young Koreans seek SA and WH programs as immersive contexts to learn English and a wide range of LOTEs. However, research on the language learning experiences of Korean SA sojourners is limited compared to other populations. Even less studied is working holidaymaking, despite its popularity. Furthermore, the language learning experiences of college students who opt to stay at home (AH) foregoing immersion abroad have largely been overlooked in SA research. This dissertation addressed these gaps by investigating Korean learners' motives in choosing to study abroad, work abroad, or stay at home, along with two individual differences: international posture and initial proficiency. Data were collected at the point of decision-making and 4 months into participants' language learning journey (either for English or LOTEs). The mixed-methods longitudinal design featured surveys (Time 1: n = 390, Time 2: n = 170), an Elicited Imitation Task (EIT) measuring oral proficiency and semi-structured interviews (Time 1: n = 207, Time 2: n = 170). Data analysis involved mixed ANOVA, exploratory factor analysis, regression analysis, content analysis, and thematic analysis. The findings suggest linguistic gains will not be predicted by context alone, and instead individual differences and experiences abroad and at home will contribute to greater or lesser learning regardless of (im)mobility and (non)immersion. They also demonstrate how context, individual differences, and learners' imagination of the target community interact with micro-, meso-, and macro-level influences (Douglas Fir Group, 2016) and shape language learning decisions and lived experiences. The study provides nuanced insights into the complexities of learner motives in choosing their learning context and their subsequent responses to the realities encountered in those contexts. Grounded in unusually rich interview evidence (Time 1: n = 207, Time 2: n = 170), the dissertation also offers a robust examination of the underexplored WH context as a unique form of language immersion blending work and travel, while also giving voice to AH students, an often-overlooked population. Finally, by incorporating participants learning both English and LOTEs from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds, the dissertation emphasizes multilingualism and social justice in applied linguistics, providing insights into the imaginations and realities that shape diverse individuals' educational and life trajectories.
