This study investigated the effects of prerequisite skills and the opinions of familiar adults on the acquisition of independent manding in non-vocal adults, comparing sign language and selection-based communication systems. A quantitative, single-subject three-phase alternating treatment design was used to identify the most effective mode of communication. Participants included three non-vocal adults with intellectual disabilities residing in a state-operated developmental center. Prerequisite skills were assessed in the areas of imitation and visual-perceptual skills, while a paired stimulus preference assessment identified motivating reinforcers. Data collection focused on the frequency of independent mands in each communication mode, which was visually analyzed for trends, variability, and overlap. Results demonstrated that prerequisite skills significantly influenced communication mode efficiency, with variability in individual outcomes. The findings highlight the importance of individualized communication interventions based on data-driven assessments. The study's practical implications include advancing the selection of communication modes for non-vocal adults, enhancing functional communication training, and incorporating caregiver insights into intervention planning. It contributes to applied behavior analysis (ABA) by offering evidence-based guidance for practitioners and addressing gaps in understanding the relationship between prerequisite skills and communication outcomes. Future research should explore broader populations and additional communication modalities to validate and expand these findings.
