Chalcogenides such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) have stacked layers held together by weak van der Waals bonding that allows for changes to the bulk structure. Dimensional reduction (3D to 2D), through layer exfoliation or direct synthesis methods, is a proven strategy for enhancing thermoelectric performance of these materials. These modifications can also alter surface properties or yield active sites to facilitate investigations of selective ion transport or edge modulation doping. Specifically, lithium-based exfoliation of MoS2 yields 2D 1T MoS2 platelets with hydrophilic negative dipole surfaces. 1T MoS2 platelets deposited as thin films can selectively uptake and move ions thanks to their surface characteristics, interlayer/interplatelet channels and thermoelectric properties. Transient (~1-3 minutes) and steady-state (1 hour, 48 hours) ion transport processes were investigated in thermally activated 1T or 1T/2H MoS2 thin films exposed to droplets or baths of salt (NaCl) water. Results indicate that MoS2 does achieve Seebeck-mediated ionic transport up to 48 hours, and it may be a viable candidate for water desalination or biomedical technologies that rely on ion transport. Bi2Te3 is a superior thermoelectric material as well as a known topological insulator (TI), and solution-grown 2D Bi2Te3 platelets permit nanoparticle growth at active edge sites. As 2D TIs, Bi2Te3 platelets are expected to maintain protected edge states with counterpropagating 1D spin currents. Iron nanoparticle growth around the Bi2Te3 platelet perimeter may contribute edge doping effects or provide intrinsic magnetic fields for symmetry breaking of edge states. The 2D platelet geometry enables strategic placement of localized magnetic fields near edge spin currents. Solution-based iron edge growth and doping of Bi2Te3 platelets was attempted under reducing and non-reducing conditions; iron growth location (platelet edge vs. surface) can be controlled through addition of a reducing agent during the doping process. Under non-reducing conditions, electron microscopy and MFM imaging indicate that edge-borne iron is present, and it displays strong magnetic field signatures. Thermoelectric measurements confirm iron doping of Bi2Te3 takes place, but oxidation causes rapid degradation of performance. Bi2Te3:Fe systems can contribute to a better understanding of TI-magnetic field interactions and phenomena associated with these processes.
