Non-native English-speaking international students face substantial challenges due to language barriers, contributing to acculturative stress. This mixed-methods study examines how AR glasses and mobile apps differ in enhancing the translation experiences of these students and assesses if AR glasses can mitigate language barriers. We hypothesized that AR glasses, compared to the mobile app, would enhance usability, affective state, and interpersonal connectedness in both academic and therapeutic settings. We used a repeated-measures design with 40 native Chinese-speaking current or former U.S. higher education students. Participants used both AR glasses and mobile apps in simulated Lecture and Therapy scenarios with a Spanish-speaking researcher, with quantitative measures collected and semi-structured interviews conducted. Quantitative results showed no significant differences between devices, likely due to usability issues with the AR glasses. Qualitatively, despite translation speed and accuracy impacting satisfaction, participants recognized the potential of AR glasses to facilitate more natural interactions through nonverbal communication with their wearable and nonintrusive design. They believed AR glasses could boost communication confidence, lessen judgments of language insufficiency, and assist in language learning and cultural adaptation. We also explored challenges in academic, healthcare, and mental health settings, assessing how AR glasses could enhance these experiences. The study highlighted how technology can help international students overcome daily language challenges and suggested design refinements to further reduce users' cognitive load and enhance effectiveness in real-world scenarios. Our findings advocate for continuous innovation with AR technology to better facilitate the integration of international students and promote a diverse and inclusive educational environment.
