Latinos are the largest ethnic minority in the United States; however, they have had disproportionately low socioeconomic status (SES) and more likely have experienced disparities as a result. Ultimately, these challenges and barriers have negatively impacted their overall well-being. Despite these experiences, Latinos have been less likely to seek mental health services, leaving them vulnerable to poor and worsening outcomes. Thus, it's important to identify protective factors that will help buffer against negative well-being outcomes and promote positive ones. This study explored two constructs that may be critical to promoting their well-being, which included their cultural values (i.e., familismo, simpatia, traditional machismo, caballerismo, and marianismo) and the exchange of social support (i.e., empathy, perceived social support, and prosocial behaviors). A sample of 87 Latinos completed measures related to the aforementioned topics and regressions were run to determine the influence of these constructs on each other and, in turn, their effect on overall well-being. This study found that particular cultural values were significant to the exchange of social support, while certain components of social support were beneficial, and others had adverse effects. Overall, this work highlights the significance of cultural values with promoting the exchange of social support for Latino individuals and benefiting from it.
