Before the 1970s a space that rarely concerned itself with either formal religion or overt political participation, this thesis traces how the rodeo circuit underwent a transformation that encouraged it to become a space that expressed Christian nationalism. Cowboy ministries emerged in the early 1970s, and set out to transform rodeo cowboys from hellraising, violent characters into men instilled with the Christian virtues essential to white Christian manhood. These ministries found institutional support from church planting ministries associated with the Church Growth Movement, which, within the United States, attempted to establish predominately white spaces of worship. The 2000s saw a surge in militant rhetoric within rodeo, largely predicated on the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks and subsequent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The rhetoric that dominated the circuit during this time largely reinforced ideas of American exceptionalism, specifically within the context of the United States's imagined role as a providential agent in spreading Christian democracy internationally. By the late 2010s, the rodeo circuit were subsumed by Christian nationalism and its rhetoric, and not only followed but enthusiastically supported the rise of Donald Trump. When Trump supporters staged an insurrection on January 6, 2021, a former cowboy preacher helped lead the charge. This thesis examines how and why this transformation occurred, arguing that rodeo's emphasis on the mythic American West and rugged cowboy masculinity made it fertile ground for the growth of Christian nationalist sentiment.
