This dissertation investigates how, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, developments in art, psychology, and technology shaped our understanding of intimacy and the ways in which it became increasingly mediated. Mediation, therefore, became an increasingly essential component of human relations in a way that detached intimacy from the real and corporeal, making it distant. I argue through a reading of both British and American modernist novels that this mediated, distant intimacy is a precursor of parasocialism, a term coined by psychologists Horton and Wohl in the 1950s to describe one-sided intimacies formed by the audience with a performer, a phenomenon I believe to be incredibly prevalent today with the internet and social media. Though Horton and Wohl locate this phenomenon in television and radio, I trace it to an older technology, the novel, and in doing so I find that the novel is a foundational template for understanding and operating in distant intimacies. Though all novels engage with distant intimacy to some extent, I focus on the modernist novel in particular because of its awareness of new forms of intimacy, identity, and relationships, and its interest in engaging with questions of how we can know others, and how we can communicate ourselves to them. Ultimately, the modernist novels I study in this dissertation suggest that distance and mediation, intimacy across time and space, or through telegraph or writing, open up a space for imagination to fill, using the template of reading and the novel. As such, mediated, distant intimacies operate on literary, aesthetic, models of relationality. The way we relate to each other through distant intimacies and parasocial relationships comes to resemble the way we relate to literary characters. Reading, then, reveals itself to be the ultimate form of parasocialism, the epitome of distant intimacy.
