Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French composer and teacher known for his contributions to 20th-century classical music. He was a prolific composer who created a wide range of works, including symphonies, chamber music, operas, and ballet. Nonetheless, the violin compositions of Milhaud have been overlooked in the mainstream violin repertoire, even though Milhaud's initial training as a violinist preceded his exclusive commitment to composition. It is noteworthy that despite the diverse range of genres explored in his violin oeuvres, including violin concertos, chamber works, and a solo violin piece, these works have not received widespread or regular performance.Milhaud composed his second violin sonata in 1917 during his time in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, six years after completing his first violin sonata. Violin Sonata No. 2 shows his distinctive compositional style, characterized by polymodality, neo-classical elements, and a light, playful character. This sonata enables violinists to discover Milhaud's unique lyricism, ranging from a pastoral atmosphere to a lively rustic rhythm. Additionally, it offers a chance to investigate a burgeoning trend in French music after World War I, epitomized by Les Six in the 1920s and moving away from the influence of Debussy. This treatise first delves into biographical details with a focus on Milhaud's sources of inspiration, cultural background, and his regional identity, and provides an introductory overview of his compositions for the violin. It then explores musical characteristics of each movement of the Violin Sonata No. 2, such as the form, structure, musical features, and ensemble. Finally, I present a performance guide to assist musicians in approaching the timbral effect, fingerings, bow strokes, tempo changes, dynamics, and nuances employed in the sonata with the musical idiom of the first half of the 20th century. This guide aims to provide performers with interpretative guidance, fostering a better approach to this sonata and ultimately contributing to its increased popularity in the concert repertoire.
