This thesis uses alchemical and traditional hermeneutic and heuristic methodologies to explore the experience of insomnia and how the experience of insomnia may connect to the needs of the soul. Using a research-based approach, this thesis introduces the history of sleep and insomnia and how the night has influenced myth and storytelling. How sleep and dreams can affect psychobiological needs are examined as well as how Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, may offer relief for insomnia. Using a depth psychological lens, alchemical hermeneutic and heuristic research are engaged to explore a lived experience with chronic insomnia over the past several years and how the needs of the soul manifested in periods of nighttime waking. Findings were related to the discovery of soul's presence in insomnia in the processing of grief, the remembrance of ancestors, and in a connection to the night that deepened spiritual awareness.
