This thesis explores the innovative functionalization of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) membranes to maximize their potential in a diverse range of catalytic applications. It provides an in-depth and multifaceted analysis, with a particular focus on the membranes' catalytic role in energy conversion processes. The research is organized into three interrelated yet distinct investigative fields. First, the UHMWPE membranes are strategically utilized as substrates for the deposition of Cu2O and Pt nanoparticles, which are subsequently employed in the gas-phase photocatalytic water splitting. This innovative approach has been demonstrated to significantly enhance the stability and efficiency of the process, attributable to the robust interaction between the nanoparticles and the UHMWPE membrane, coupled with the membrane's ability to facilitate the efficient permeation of water vapour. Secondly, the research turns into the domain of electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reactions, where it introduces a novel 500 nm thick gold-polyethylene gas diffusion electrode. This gas diffusion electrode is specifically designed for the conversion of CO2into CO and has been found to exhibit exceptional activity, selectivity, and durability. In the third work, the thesis pioneers an inventive methodology for the transformation of UHMWPE into fibrous carbon under ambient conditions. This process not only addresses the pressing environmental challenge of plastic waste but also results in the creation of a carbonized platinum-polyethylene membrane with elevated electrochemical performance, ideal for ethanol oxidation reaction. The collective research presented in this thesis holds profound implications for the progressive development of clean energy technologies and the reduction of plastic pollution. They are in sync with the global movement towards a circular economy and the objectives of environmental sustainability, providing a roadmap for future research and innovations.
