There is a plethora of articles and documents by scholarly figures articulating their views on what constitutes "good" art. Whether it's Halbert Britan or Milton Babbitt, the common strategy within aesthetic discourse is to claim that "certain objects or forms please us 'naturally' by virtue of certain human universals" and assert "the belief that a norm and thus 'standard' of correct and defective taste can be derived accordingly." In other words, those attuned to a given community's sensibilities are morally sound, have "good taste," and are superior to the flawed individuals in opposition to the community's proclivities. The saxophone, invented in 1838, found itself at a point in history where classical music in the twentieth century became increasingly splintered, allowing for different aesthetics to exist simultaneously, resulting in greater stratification of taste between laymen and professional musicians. This document will use the saxophone and its repertoire in a case study that will explore the saxophone's history, how it can influence the development of a saxophonist's identity, and how our identity influences our artistic palate and sense of musical value.
