Through the lens of attachment theory (Bowlby, 1988), the objective of this study was to examine the effect of human attachment style and an individual's attachment to their pet on anxiety and subjective well-being (SWB). This was a replication of a 2022 study conducted in Germany by Lass-Hennemann et al., who found that a stronger emotional attachment to one's dog was associated with negative psychological effects. However, their study was limited to a German population and dog owners. Therefore, this study was conducted to expand on their findings by including the American population and other popular forms of pet ownership, such as cats. In addition, this study examined SWB, while Lass-Henneman et al. (2022) focused on anxiety. While no significant relationships were found, this research provides a starting point for a number of potential future studies. In particular, it is suggested that future research focuses on older and/or clinical populations, as well as examining other psychological effects such as depression.
