Attachment theory, a psychological paradigm for understanding relationships, has been widely researched for its implications for human behavior and mental health. Many researchers have explored it as a paradigm for understanding the psychology of religion. There appears to be a large body of research about the interpersonal benefits of secure attachment to God. Research in the field of attachment to God has also identified that humans develop an attachment to God that corresponds to or compensates for attachment relationships with early caregivers. For people who develop an attachment to God through compensatory means, there can be a shift from an insecure to a secure style of relating to self and others. These shifts are also called earned secure attachment. It was hypothesized that these shifts may have a positive impact on the interpersonal well-being of people who experience these shifts. This literature review explored how the compensatory framework and earning a secure attachment to God impact the mental health, specifically interpersonal functioning, of people who have experienced this shift. It appears that much research has been done investigating the mental health outcomes associated with the different attachment styles to God. However, not much has been identified in the research about how earning a secure attachment to God leads people to experience themselves and others in new ways. It could also be further explored how the triune nature of the Christian God would affect the understanding of earned secure attachment's impact on mental health. Overall, more research could be done to understand what attachment to deities looks like among polytheistic religions.
