Since its inception in the early twentieth century, academic theatre has used practical production experiences as a link between education and the professional industry. This experience was propelled by the educational pioneers, George Pierce Baker, Hallie Flanagan, and Thomas Wood Stevens, claiming production work as an essential tool for industry improvement and professionalization. However, universities struggled with the placement of this non-traditional academic work, frequently leaving it to be an extracurricular component and placing large amounts of additional labor on student participants. Today, contemporary collegiate theatre programs continue the tradition of practical production work as tools of industry improvement and professionalization, with this requirement now codified by the National Association for Schools of Theatre's (NAST) accreditation standards. This thesis will trace the history of production work in academic theatre from the early programs such as Harvard and Yale to Florida State University's current School of Theatre (FSU SOT). This history will culminate in an exploration of educational ideals in practice as an examination of my autoethnographic approach as the calling stage manager for one of FSU's fall productions. This experience allows a glimpse at how FSU's ideals manifest in the production process, focusing on the labor of student participants and the sustainable systems that have been implemented to protect the wellbeing of these students. This thesis proposes that academic theatre more closely returns to the original mission of industry improvement, working as a try-out space for sustainable labor practices that can shift the professional industry away from its current normalization of burnout and exhaustion.
