Studies prove physical fitness or athletic team activities increase cohesion. Performance in any physical activity as a group requires various levels of individual and group dynamics. Dynamics influenced by the task and how the individual or group socially interacts within the boundaries of an objective or goal, generates cohesion. This interaction or level of cohesion can determine outcomes of performance. Research proves leadership from the top down and peer to peer can positively impact cohesion and organizational performance. Military executives who lead with transformational attributes and competencies while promoting physical activity at the lowest command levels may increase unit cohesion. Research also provides knowledge demonstrating stressors applied through physical activity can enhance cohesion when the group perceives their leadership leads by example and expectation. This study examines transformational leadership and the impact on cohesion among various units in the Ohio Army National Guard (OHARNG). Leaders who are physically fit and apply transformational attributes through organizational physical activities, exhibit higher levels of unit cohesion. Higher levels of cohesion directly correlate to increase unit performance such as unit retention.
